HURDS
FAMILY FARM
Corn Maze Challenge
WELCOMES YOU AND YOUR STUDENTS TO OUR 2008 FUN AND EDUCATIONAL
SCHOOL GROUP ADVENTURE
2007
GIANT SUNFLOWER MAZE:
What flowers have a cheerful nature, tenacious spirit, and
are as American as baseball and apple pie? Yes! The Sunflower!
This year's maze design at Hurds Family Farm is a GIANT
SUNFLOWER symbol created out of field corn and sunflowers.
This popular flower has a heritage that goes back to Peter
the Great's excursions to Holland where he was so impressed
with sunflowers that he brought the seeds home and began sinking
their roots in Russia's soil. Before long they were popular
in Italy, The United States,
and throughout the world. |

Hurds Family Farm's 2006 corn maze challenge design was "The
Big Apple: Our Empire State".
Come join the fun.. get a flag and a map and discover each of
the 12 stations where you'll find tidbits about our state's sites
of natural beauty and history interests!!

Classroom
in the Cornfield
During
the months of September and October, Hurds Family Farm will open
the fields to give school groups a first hand opportunity to visit
a working family farm and orchard. Students can investigate and
gather information about the science of growing crops that feed
people. Our tours are lead by experienced, trained guides who
are excited about sharing their enthusiasm for agriculture with
your group. We believe that direct experiences are a valuable
teaching and learning aid when combined with wholesome fun in
the country.
Celebrating our Seventh Year with our fabulous
4-Acre Corn Maze "We're All Ears" at Hurds
Family Farm!!!
Preschool Maze Experience
New for 2006
Due
to the many preschool groups that come to us for their autumn
apple pumpkin adventure, we've added a brand new mini cornfield
maze just for our youngest visitors.
Children (and their teachers and parents) can twist and turn
through this 1/4 acre to get an idea of what a maze is like.
This is a very easy maze geared just for their age group, an
sure to delight kids of all ages!
This year will be the seventh year we've designed a 4-acre cornfield
maze to challenge our older students. The 2007 living puzzle
is in the shape of a giant sunflower. Students may not be aware
of the many and varied uses of this one a-maize-ing flower found
in so many of the products we use daily in our lives.
Teachers will love the fact
that we pay close attention to our NY state learning standards
when creating each of the educational stations. |
SEED FOR THOUGHT
Did you know that the fiber content of three tablespoons of sunflower
kernels equals a serving of bran cereal?
Map Reading
Grades 2-4
OUR MAZE IS VERY KID FRIENDLY!
Begin your adventure with a "Stalk Talk" by our Maze Master, who
loves to share a bit about growing corn and how this maze was
created.
Hand out maps and give map reading clues. Practice turning the
maps and following the clues at each of the 12 interactive stations
in the maze to reach the Victory Tower!
Everyone receives a personal certificate as a reward for all the
fresh air and exercise.
This
maze can easily be completed in 20-30 minutes depending on your
walking pace.
CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE!!!
Junior Team building
Grades 4-6
Engaging, interactive food system lesson:
Journey from orchard to table. Students will learn about many
careers involved in getting an apple from the orchard to the cafeteria,
while addressing learning standards in math, science and technology,
career development, history and language arts.
Take a relaxing tractor-pulled hayride through the orchard countryside
to experience a working orchard. We'll share a bit of the history
of our six generation century farm.
Students may hand pick their own 5 lb. bag of fruit from the trees
or harvest their own perfect pumpkin from the patch.
Our Maze Master will greet students
1. Give overview of process of how to create a maze.
2. Go over game plan and map skills needed to navigate maze so
each team can complete with success
3. Divide into small groups. Groups will make decisions and work
together toward a common goal. There are 12 interactive checkpoints
hidden along the maze pathways.
Allow abut 30 minutes for this part of the field trip. Students
will want to climb the Victory tower when they finish walking
through this living puzzle.
CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE!!!
Teacher and aide are complimentary. The all included activity
fee is $7.00 each for students and other adults.
Their are picnic tables under the festive red and white tent near
the barn, if your group wishes to bring lunch. The red barn has
healthy snacks, bottled water, cider, coffee and favorite country
items and crafts.
If we know in advance, the farm can provide a light lunch fare
for group of outdoor picnic style grilled hot dogs, relish, and
condiments, bag of chips and juice box or cider. Please call for
details.
