Susan Hurd is
an experienced tour guide, former Elementary School teacher, mother, farmer,
entrepreneur, amateur musician and naturalist.
Susan has served as an independent consultant for Cornell Cooperative
Extension for 2 years, presenting "Agriculture in the Classroom"
workshops for teachers and also completed a Cornell agricultural leadership
training. She is married to Phil Hurd and they have 2 college-age students
in the family; Megan, 25 & Charles, 23. Their ideas, input, & energy are
invaluable.

During
the months of September and October, Hurd's Family Farm will open the
fields to give school groups a first hand opportunity to visit a working
family farm and orchard. Our tours are lead by experienced, trained
guides who are excited about sharing their enthusiasm for agriculture
with your group. We believe that direct experiences are a valuable
teaching and learning aid when combined with wholesome fun in the country.
In planning for your educational excursion, we have worked hard to incorporate
many New York State Learning Standards for science, social studies, math,
art and language arts into the student's experience.

Upon
arrival, we will greet your group and welcome you to our farm. We will
cover any information that will make your field trip safe and enjoyable.

PULLED HAYRIDE
AND APPLE PICKING
You
and your students will enjoy a hayride through the countryside, where
you will harvest a bag of crisp, juicy, healthy apples directly from
the trees. "A plump, juicy apple never tastes as good as the one you pick from your own hand!"

LITTLE
FARMERS
ABC'S OF AGRICULTURE SCARECROW'S MINI-MAZE
For
the younger elementary grades we have a brand NEW self directed 1/4 acre
corn stalk 1'st time maze to wander through. Students will learn all about
what "Pride of New York" products are grown in New York farms while they
scramble through the pathways following the ABC's! Before you go through
this maze our guide will lead your group in an interactive game, Grocery
Bag Botany, a great way to discover about the parts of plants that we
eat.

KID'S
CORRAL
AND EXPANDED FARM ANIMAL AREA
We
have added a large fenced in outdoor play area for younger children, where
they can scramble to their heart's delight. The corral includes the popular
20 foot high cornstalk teepee, "Cameron the Caterpillar" our tire creature,
New! Straw Pyramid, Gopher Hole and slides, the popular giant sandbox,
stationary farm tractor, Scarecrow Mini-Maze Maze, among other
activities. Great photo opportunities!
Everyone will
enjoy feeding the farm animal pets! Food is provided for each class. On site feeders available too.

PICNIC
AREA
Included
in the Basic Plan is the use of the clean, neat picnic area near the barn under the
NEW red and white tent. There is also a 3 acre grassy field available
where groups enjoy their lunches. Portable restrooms and handwashing station
are also available.
Please allow
one and one-half (1 1/2)
- two (2) hours for this tour. The cost is $7.00 per student. The teacher and aide are complimentary. Additional parents and siblings, add $3.00 each.
Additional activities may be added to the Basic Field Trip plan.

We have our Big Red Barn open that features country craft items, jams,
apple butter, maple products, home grown produce, especially winter squash,
and snack items such as trail mixes, bottled water, coffee, baked goods,
and local cider. This year, you may purchase hot dogs, and we've added
a new popcorn machine.
As always, the trip coordinator and the bus drivers will get to pick a
complimentary bag of apples.

Scenic tractor-pulled hayride through the orchards to experience a real working farm and orchard.
Harvest by hand your own 5 lb. Bag of apples from the trees. "A plump, juicy apple never tastes as good as the one you pick from you own hand!"
Interactive, engaging group talk about agriculture, led by one of our enthusiastic teachers. (Grocery Bag botany, Little Sprout, What's the Buzz About Bees, Four Seasons of Apple Growing are a few of our favorite lessons!)
Depending on the group, you may choose to take your class on one o the two maze experiences. There's the 10 minute "Scarecrow" 1/4 acre mini maze near the red barn or the 40-45 minute 4-acre maze in the "Back Forty".

Enjoy the activities in the giant Kid's Corral, Feed the farm animals at
The Critter Corner. They love the attention and treats you give them. Clean
picnic tables under the festive red and white tent. Teachers and/or aide
are complimentary - all included in Activity Fee: Students and other adults
$7.00. For an additional $1.00, you may pick your perfect pumpkin.

Scenic tractor-driven hayride through orchard countryside to experience a Working orchard and farm.
Engaging interactive food system lesson: Journey from Orchard to Table. Your students will learn about many careers involved in getting an apple from the orchard to the cafeteria, while addressing learning standards in Math, Science and Technology, Career Development and Language Arts.
Harvest a 5lb. Bag of apples from the trees or pick a sugar pie pumpkin from the giant pumpkin patch.
Our Maze master will give a brief overview about the fascinating process of creating a maze from the design idea to growing the corn and carving out the pathways. Weıll form teams and go over the game plan and map skills needed to navigate the maze. At each station the team will discover a question they need to answer. If they answer it correctly theyıll be given a clue to proceed to the next station. If not, theyıll find a dead end and will need to go back and head the other way!
Allow about 45 minutes for this part of the trip. Students will want to climb the Victory Tower when they finish the challenge and check out the giant Kernels of Knowledge game.
Teacher and an aide are complimentary. Students and other adults are $7.00.
PUMPKIN
PICKING FIELD TRIP
*Play an interactive engaging Lesson "Little Sprout". Students will learn about the parts of a seed and their function.

One last thought. You may want to bring
along some empty boxes for storing the large bags of apples for your return
trip. Markers and tape are also useful to close and label each bag.
