A breezy day in the 70s feels like fall and the start of school. If only this humidity would take a hike. Break out the blender and whip up a tasty treat using your fresh picked apples and garden veggies. Don't let the green color fool you, if you close your eyes it will taste like apple pie! Kids will love this nutritous drink perfect for an on the go breakfast.
To start, come out to Hurds Family Farm and pick your own apples. Ready to pick this weekend we have Macintosh, Jonagold, Ginger Gold, Tydeman, & Paula Reds. Any apples would work in this smoothie, but the Macs & Tydemans are the juiciest. Nothing gets kids more into eating healthy then picking their own apples.
We have cucumber & kale that you can pick fresh right at our barn market. You don't need it for the smoothie, but there are also summer squash & zucchini available to pick. The rest of the ingredients can be gathered from your local market and arranged to make a funny face in the bowl.
Wash, peel, chop add to blender seems to be a trend for creating this delicious drink. A handful of greens, apples, cucumber, and avocado are what give this smoothie it's FUN color.
Add some walnuts for protein. You can use any nuts, but if you have a nut allergy try sunflower seeds or sunflower butter.
The apple pie flavor comes from the cinnamon. Ginger aids in digestion amongst other health benefits.
Honey gives a touch of sweetness. Choose any type of milk for liquid or consider apple juice or water. Unsweetened vanilla hemp milk is a nice replacement for someone with allergies to dairy or nuts.
Blend until it is smooth.
Garnish with a thin slice of apple if you want to get fancy. Adults can also add some vanilla vodka or rum if you have had a long day at work.
