Hurds Farm School for Kids

Join our family for unique learning and fun at the farm. Each session will be themed with lessons aligned with NY state standards, engaging STEM activities, and plenty of opportunities to make friends and play together.

Our teaching team is passionate about connecting kids with one another and with our farm. Ms. Sarah was a middle and high school math teacher for 11 years, has been on the farm for 13 years, and homeschools her 2 young children. Every class will be themed and full of activities that will keep kids engaged, having fun, and most importantly, learning something new and interesting!

All classes include 1 hour of themed structured activities and 1 hour of free play on some of our most popular activities.

Little Kids Classes

Each preschool session will include some combination of music, dancing, games, story time, crafts, and team-building fun. Caregivers are expected to help keep their little ones focused and be another set of eyes, ears, and hands in our community classroom. The whole family will be ready for lunch and a nap by the end.

All Ages

Fun for all ages! We will be taking our Little Kids Class and mixing in Big Kid Fun to create a lesson the whole family will love. Parents of students under 5 should plan to be a helping set of hands in the classroom. Families with older siblings will need a parent nearby in the parent lounge and to accompany children outside during the free play time.

Big Kid Classes

1st-5th-grade sessions will be themed and include ELA, Math, and a STEM-based activity. Every day will include team building and opportunities to make new friends. Some days will include hands-on farm learning out in the field. Caregivers must wait nearby in a parent lounge during the 1 hour of guided activities and chaperone kids during the 1 hour of free play (unless they have attended prior classes with Ms. Sarah).

Will the classes be every week?

No. They will only be on the following dates:

  • SUNDAY CLASSES: March 29th, April 19th & May 17th

What types of topics will you be teaching?

Each week, we will have a different theme for our lessons.  Some will be inspired by what is happening at the farm, and every day will be unique, with activities based on our chosen topic.

What is the cost for the classes?

Class prices are $29 perstudent and $12 additional for siblings and/or multiple adults per class, depending on when you sign up and for how many classes. Toddlers under 19 months are free with a paying sibling.

Are there make-up classes or refunds if a student misses a class?

There are no refunds if you have to miss a class, nor is there a time that you could make up the missed class.

Will the farm be open to the public?

At this time, we will not be regularly open to the public during the Spring and Summer seasons. However, we will be hosting these three workshops this spring, along with the kids' farm school classes: the Healthy Apple Tree Workshop on March 28th, the Apple Tree Growing Workshop on April 18th, and the Apple Tree Trimming Workshop on May 16th. We are also available for field trips and site rentals.

Will the classes be canceled if it rains?

Classes are rain or shine. We have plenty of space to modify our lessons to be indoors more than out, but the farm is sometimes even more fun in the rain! If you need to cancel for any reason, there are no refunds, but you could let a family you know take your spot.

Is there a registration fee or sign-up deadline?

Since guardians are staying on the property, there is no registration fee. We look forward to getting to know your family and building our kid-learning community. Students must be paid for at least 1 week before the class date, but we recommend signing up earlier, as there are only limited spots available.

What do we need to bring with us?

Please bring drinks and snacks. Dress for the weather by wearing a hat, sunscreen, a jacket, and rain boots if needed. We will provide all materials for the activities.

Can siblings who do not meet the age ranges for a class come and sit quietly?

No. Any children from 19 months to 12 years old must pay the student price to be on the property during class time. Our all-ages class may be the best fit for families with siblings who are not close in age.

Is this a drop-off event?

Is this a drop-off event?

The little kids' class requires a grown-up to be a hands-on helper and an extra set of eyes in the classroom, so drop off is not an option. The big kids class is only a drop-off for students who have taken at least 2 farm school classes in the past. The all-ages class would require 1 “adult” sibling, 13 or older, to be responsible for the other siblings.

Do children need a chaperone to play outside during the free playtime?

For everyone’s comfort and safety, children will need to be accompanied by a chaperone who is 13 or older.

Can we arrive early and stay past the end time to picnic or enjoy the property?

Participants' time is limited to 1 hour of class and 1 hour of free play. We do recommend you arrive 5-10 minutes early to check in and get comfortable. Participants are expected to leave before the following class begins. If you would like to stay for additional time, you would have to pay for an additional class time slot.

We are not interested in the Farm School or Workshop class. Can we just come to the farm to play?

During class time, students are expected to be active participants in the class activities and not be outside playing. The only way to play without attending the class would be to pay for the class, but visit just for the free play hour.
